Man in the Iron Mask, The (1939 Louis Hayward, Joan Bennett)
James Whale’s swashbuckling adaptation of the Alexander Dumas novel is about twin heirs to France’s throne (both played by Louis Hayward) who are separated at birth. One, Louis, is raised as a prince, while Philippe is ignorant of his true identity. When Philippe is arrested with his cronies, D’Artagnan (Warren William) and the three musketeers, he meets his brother, now king, face-to-face. The tyrannical Louis decides Philippe could be useful, but complications arise when Philippe meets the king’s beautiful fiancee, Maria Theresa (Joan Bennett). Whale’s film is a rousing adventure tale, full of palace intrigue and thrilling sword fights.
